Sony has announced new external SSDs. The SL-M models have a read and write speed of 1000MB/s, the SL-C SSDs are slower but more compact. Both SSDs come in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB variants.

Sony has provided the SL-M and SL-C SSDs with a striking aluminum housing with yellow sides. The manufacturer supplies yellow rubber bands and labels. The storage media is dustproof and water resistant based on the ip67 rating. The USB-C port is sealed, making the SSDs waterproof up to one meter deep for up to half an hour. Sony also claims that they should be able to withstand a drop of up to three meters.

The SL-M flash drives are NVME models with 1000MB/s sequential read and write performance. The SL-C variants are slightly smaller and offer sequential read speeds of 540MB/s and write speeds of 520MB/s. Sony does not report which memory controller the SSDs have. The USB port is of the 3.1 gen 2 type, for theoretical transfer speeds of up to 10GBit/s.

The SSDs provide hardware encryption with aes256 encryption and users can provide them with an administrator and user password. Sony has not announced prices yet. Sony is expanding its line of SSDs from SL-E and SL-BG models with the SL-M and SL-C models. They offer less storage capacity and slower speeds.
