Sony: PlayStation 5 expected to remain difficult to obtain until 2022
Sony expects that the PlayStation 5 will also be difficult to reach consumers in 2022. Even if the persistent chip shortages diminish, Sony expects it to be difficult to catch up with demand, it says in a letter to analysts.
The availability of the PS5 will remain poor ‘throughout 2022’ due to chip shortages, the company warns in conversation with analysts that Bloomberg writes about. The company calls it a challenge to keep up with demand, and that will certainly remain so this year, says CFO Hiroki Totoki. “Even if we get a lot more parts and make more PS5 units, our inventory will still lag behind demand.”
According to Sony, the demand for consoles would continue to rise due to, among other things, the corona crisis, which means that many more people are looking for entertainment at home. Totoki does think that demand for consoles will continue after the pandemic. Last month, during the presentation of the quarterly figures, it appeared that Sony had sold 7.8 million units of the new console. This makes it the fastest-selling Sony console to date.
