The PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita will remain available for the time being. The company is thus returning to an earlier decision. The download store for the PlayStation Portable from 2005 will still be closed on July 2.

“We recently informed players that the PlayStation Store for PS3 and Vita devices would be shutting down this summer. However, upon closer inspection, it has become clear that we made the wrong decision,” writes Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan. the PlayStation blog. “I am therefore pleased to announce today that the PS Store will remain operational for these consoles.”

Sony announced in late March that its download stores for the PS3, PS Vita and PSP would be closing on July 2. This would make it impossible to purchase digital games or DLC for these consoles. According to Sony, this decision originally stemmed from “a number of factors.” The company mentions “challenges in the field of commercial support for older devices.” Sony would also like to focus more on more recent consoles, such as the PlayStation 5.

Sony’s decision was initially met with much criticism by gamers. Therefore, the company has decided to roll it back. “We can now see that many of you are incredibly eager to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue the business,” said Ryan. “I’m excited to keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy.”
