Sony is working on two-factor authentication for PlayStation Network
Sony will allow users of the PlayStation Network to log in with two-factor authentication. The arrival of the feature was discovered in system update 4.80 for the PlayStation 3. It is not yet known when the feature will be introduced.
Sony has confirmed the arrival of two-factor authentication to game website Polygon, without giving details about when or in what form the feature will be introduced. Sony could use a code sent by text message, or an app such as Google Authenticator.
It looks like Sony will opt for SMS verification. The feature has already been partially implemented in the latest update for the PlayStation 3, turns out from a screenshot posted to Twitter. Although the software asks for a code, it is not yet possible to receive it.
Until now it is not possible to provide PSN accounts with an extra layer of security. The PlayStation Network is used to manage a profile, play multiplayer games and purchase games digitally on Sony consoles such as the PS3, PS4 and PS Vita. PSN accounts may contain important information such as credit card information.
On Xbox Live, Microsoft’s counterpart to the PlayStation Network, it has been possible to use two-factor authentication since 2013. Microsoft uses the same login system for its gamers network as for all other Microsoft accounts.
