Sony is working on new PlayStation 5 with separate disk drive via USB-C
Sony is said to be working on a new version of the PlayStation 5 that will have a removable disk drive. It would be plugged into the USB-C port on the back of the console. The drive would also be sold separately.
That reports Insider Gaming based on anonymous sources. The new PS5 would contain the same hardware as the current console. The major difference lies in the fact that the device would have a separate, removable disk drive. The PlayStation 5 is currently available in two variants, one with and one without such a drive. Sony would now make a sort of middle ground.
According to the sources of Insider Gaming, the drive can be connected to the PS5 with a USB-C connection. It would be an extra port on the back of the console. The PS5 currently already has a USB-C port on the front.
Sony plans to sell the disk drive separately so that users don’t have to buy a whole new console in case of a broken one. The drive could also be sold bundled with the diskless version of the console. That could mean that the current version with the integrated drive will be phased out altogether. The new version of the console should be released in September next year, Insider Gaming says. In fiscal 2023, 18.5 million of the new models are expected to be released, compared to 12 million of the older existing models.
