Sony is going to fix PS5 issue of 4k120 display without HDR on Samsung TVs
Samsung has announced through a moderator on its European forum that Sony will come up with a solution that allows owners of high-end Samsung TVs from 2020 on the PlayStation 5 to use 4k images with 120Hz in combination with high dynamic range.
PS5 games that support a 4k resolution in combination with a refresh rate of 120Hz and high dynamic range will not work as expected on some Samsung TVs. Users have to choose between 4k with 60Hz and HDR display. To play on 4k120, HDR must be turned off. A moderator on Samsung’s European forum has confirmed that Sony is coming up with a solution to this problem.
According to the moderator, no update is required for any of the Samsung TVs in question with HDMI 2.1. This includes the Q90T, Q80T and the Q900R. These models all support this version of the HDMI standard and can display 4k120 images.
At the end of last year, there were a number of reports from owners of high-end Samsung TVs with HDMI 2.1 that it was no longer possible to combine 4k120 with HDR on the PS5. The only workaround so far is to choose 4k and 60Hz or disable HDR if 4k120 is preferred.
This issue is not an issue when pairing the PlayStation 5 with HDMI 2.1 TVs from other manufacturers. That makes it somewhat striking that the solution comes via the console and not via the Samsung televisions. However, it could have something to do with the way the PlayStation 5 passes HDR. According to television reviewer John Archer, there are more problems with this, such as with a number of audio receivers and sound bars.
