Sony is bringing Apple TV app to its 2020, 2019 and some 2018 TVs
Sony has released new firmware for its televisions that will make the Apple TV app available on a wide range of models. This concerns all televisions from 2019 and 2020 and some models from 2018.
The new firmware is out in Europe and can be found, for example, on the German Sony website. This is a firmware update for version 6.4960. It appears to be all Android TV models released by Sony in 2019 and 2020. Of the 2018 models, only the AF9 OLED TV and the ZF9 LCD TV will get the new firmware. The new firmware also adds 4k120 support for the PlayStation 5 for the ZG9, an 8k LCD TV, released last year.
With this firmware, Apple TV will be available on the various television models from Sony. Until now, this app was missing from Apple. The app had previously appeared for Sony’s XH90 TV and then it became clear that other Sony TVs would get Apple TV before the end of the year, although no exact date was known at that time. Sony previously indicated that the app on the XH90 supports 4k, hdr and Dolby Atmos, which will probably also apply to the other models that support this.
An important part of the Apple TV app is Apple TV +, a streaming service from Apple that was announced in March last year and officially launched on November 1. The app also contains TV channels and other content. In addition to the Apple TV 4K, iPhones and iPad, the Apple TV app is also available on quite a few TVs from LG and Samsung. Owners of a PlayStation 4 and 5 can also use it, as can owners of an Xbox One, Series X and S.
