Sony introduces webcam for Bravia TVs

Sony introduces the Bravia CAM. That is a webcam that can be put on top of Sony TVs from 2022. In addition to video chatting, the camera is intended for features such as gesture control and a saving mode.

Sony supplies the Bravia CAM with the TVs from the Z9K and A95K series, which will appear this year. Those models have a magnetic attachment on the back, onto which the camera module can be clicked. The camera is also compatible with other new 2022 models, but must be purchased separately and connected via USB.

Initially, the camera will work as a webcam for video chatting with Google Duo, but Sony plans to add other features as well. For example, Sony talks about Ambient Optimization Pro. The brightness of the screen can be adjusted to the environment and the distance from the viewer. Sony also says that the sound of the TV can be adjusted to the position of the viewer.

Sony also promises gesture control, a proximity warning for children who come too close to the TV and the camera must be able to be used for an Auto Power Saving mode. In addition, the TV could switch off if no one is sitting in front of it. On top of the camera module is a hardware switch to turn off the camera. Sony says that ‘no private data’ is stored in the camera module or on the TV and there is a function to delete all Bravia CAM data.

It is not yet known when Sony will release the Bravia CAM and what it will cost. It is also not yet clear when the various functions of the module will work. Sony presented the camera module along with its lineup of 2022 televisions at the CES electronics show.
