Sony announces that it has sold more than 40 million PlayStation 4 consoles since its release in 2013. A total of 270.1 million games have now been sold, which equates to almost seven games per console. This year Sony expects to sell more consoles than in previous years.

Sony counts both physical copies and online purchases in the PlayStation Store among the games sold. Uncharted 4 sold 2.7 million copies in the first week after its release in early May. Sony also has high hopes for upcoming games, such as Final Fantasy XV, The Last Guardian and Gran Turismo Sport.

Sony on Tuesday presented its expectations for the financial year 2016, which runs until March 31, 2017. The company expects to sell 20 million units of the PlayStation 4 this financial year. That is more than in 2015 and 2014, when 17.7 and 14.8 million copies were sold respectively.

In October, Sony will release the PlayStation VR and the manufacturer is likely to announce a more powerful version of the console soon. It may also appear at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2017. The faster PS4 ‘Neo’ probably offers more options in combination with Sony’s VR glasses.

Competitor Microsoft does not disclose Xbox One sales figures. At the end of January, it was estimated that some 19 million units of the console had been sold, based on statements from EA. Like the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One was released in 2013.
