Since the release of the PlayStation 5, Sony has sold 13.4 million units of the console. In the past quarter, this amounted to 3.3 million units. Despite the ongoing shortages, the PS5 still sells almost as well as the PS4 in the same period.

The PlayStation 5 has now been on the market for four quarters; the PlayStation 4 sold 13.8 million copies in the four quarters after its release. The PlayStation 5 is now slightly behind its predecessor, but is still poorly available, so that sales cannot be directly compared with the PS4, which had no shortages.

At the presentation of the figures for the previous quarter, Sony indicated it was getting enough chips to sell a total of 14.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the financial year. That fiscal year runs from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. In the first two quarters of that fiscal year, Sony has now shipped 5.6 million units.

Sony sold 76.4 million games for the PlayStation 4 and 5 in the quarter, including 7.6 million first-party titles from Sony’s own game studios. The numbers are slightly lower than in the same quarter a year ago. At that time, Sony sold 81.8 million PlayStation games, 12.8 million of which were proprietary titles.

Sony also delivered 200,000 PlayStation 4 consoles in the past quarter. In the previous quarter there were still half a million. In total, Sony has now sold 116.7 million units of the PS4. That console first came out in November 2013.

At the end of the quarter, there were 47.2 million PlayStation Plus subscribers, up 1.3 million from a year ago. The number of monthly active PlayStation Network users decreased from 108 million last year to 104 million this year. Last quarter, the number of active users also decreased compared to a year earlier. The peak in 2020 is probably related to the lockdowns as a result of the corona pandemic.

Game & Networking Services Business Unit Figures

Sony’s quarterly turnover amounted to approximately 18 billion euros, 13 percent higher than last year, partly due to the growth of the Game & Networking Services segment. The turnover of that business unit rose by 27 percent. The music and film business units also performed well, according to Sony. Operating income came in at EUR 2.4 billion. That is 1 percent higher than the same quarter last year. Net profit amounted to about 1.6 billion euros, which is 54 percent lower than in the comparable period a year ago.
