Sony gives PlayStation 4 support for external HDDs

Sony has revealed the details of an upcoming software update for the PlayStation 4 and one of the features that will be added is support for external hard drives. Software update 4.50, codenamed Sasuke, will be released in beta on Friday.

Users can connect external USB 3.0 HDDs with a maximum storage capacity of 8TB after firmware update 4.50. The console then immediately shows that there is more storage available and users can use it to store applications. In the settings they can manage the saved content.

Furthermore, the Sasuke update offers the possibility to set screenshots as wallpaper and improvements have been made to the Quick Menu, such as access to Party at Online Friends. After the update, the notifications are no longer divided into categories, but aggregated. Owners of PlayStation VR glasses will soon be able to play 3D Blu-rays with their console to experience stereoscopic 3D playback.

Sony will release software update 4.50 in beta on Friday. Those who do not participate in the test program will have to wait a little longer. In the coming weeks, Sony will announce more details about the functionality.
