Sony considered PlayStation 5 variant with lower specifications
Sony has considered making a cheaper PlayStation 5 variant with lower specifications, just like Microsoft is doing with the Xbox Series S. However, according to Sony, such consoles have not been successful in history.
Sony PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan says this in an interview with the Japanese AV Watch. According to the CEO, cheaper consoles with lesser specifications have not achieved good results in history. Ryan says the PlayStation division has considered such a console, but is not venturing it because the company has also seen “how problematic that is.”
According to Sony, gamers want to use a console for four to seven years. Sony therefore states that it wants to make hardware that can last a long time and that it does not want to make a console that will be outdated in a few years.
Sony, like Microsoft, will release two next-gen consoles in November, but the PlayStation 5 and the Digital Edition have the same specifications. The only difference is the lack of the disk drive in the latter version, which is also a hundred euros cheaper.
With the Xbox Series X, Microsoft opts for a top model and a two hundred euros cheaper Xbox Series S, which has considerably less graphics processing power. Microsoft states that games on the Series S benefit from all new techniques, but that this console is made for gaming at lower resolutions, up to 1440p.
