Sony acquires Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games Games
Sony to acquire developer Insomniac Games. The latter is the development studio best known for the well-received PlayStation 4 game Marvel’s Spider-Man, released last year.
Sony Interactive Entertainment says it has entered into a definitive agreement with Insomniac Games to finalize the acquisition, although the relevant regulators have yet to consider it and there are still a number of undisclosed conditions to be fulfilled. No financial details about the transaction have been released, as it is contractually agreed upon, according to Sony.
Once the acquisition is finalized, Insomniac will become the fourteenth in-house studio to make games under the Sony Interactive Entertainment banner. Sony’s Shawn Layden said he was delighted to welcome Insomniac to the Worldwide Studios family. Both companies have been working together for years, as witnessed last year for the PlayStation 4, Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has already sold 13.2 million copies. Due to the acquisition, future games from Insomniac will probably only be released for the PlayStation platform.
Ted Price, the current CEO of Insomniac, founded the American development studio in 1994 under the then name Xtreme Software. The company was renamed Insomniac Games a year later and has been an independent developer until now, although it has made several titles for the PlayStation in particular, such as Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and Spyro the Dragon. However, it also made the necessary titles for Windows.
