Sonos removes function to stream music locally via iOS
Sonos no longer makes it possible to play local music from an iPhone or iPad. Users who want to do this from now on can only do so via AirPlay 2, if their Sonos device supports it.
Until recently, users could play local music from their iOS device to a Sonos device over Wi-Fi. This was possible via a tab in the app. According to Sonos, however, that feature no longer works well with the “newer” versions of iOS, although the company does not say which versions it concerns or what the problem is exactly. The feature is now completely gone from the iOS app. The feature will still exist in Android and on the desktop apps.
Users who want to stream music to a Sonos device in the future can do so in several ways. Sonos itself recommends using AirPlay 2; which is supported by the Sonos One, Beam, Amp, Playbase and the Play:5. Users of other devices can also upload their local music to a music streaming service such as Apple Music or Spotify and play it from there. In some cases, a premium account is required for this. Sonos also recommends looking at alternatives such as your own nas.
