Some of Scythe’s Skylake Coolers Can Damage Hardware – Update
Some Scythe socket 1151 compatible processor coolers can cause damage to the motherboard and processor in the event of physical shock. The company agrees to send free replacement screws that fix the problem to customers.
Scythe announces the news on its support page. The coolers suffering from the problem are the Ashura, Mugen 4, Mugen 4 PCGH-Edition, Fuma, Ninja 4, Grand Kama Cross 3, Mugen Max and Kotetsu. All of these coolers use the company’s Hyper Precision Mounting System. When the coolers are used on other platforms, there is nothing to worry about.
The problem is said to stem from a different positioning of the mounting points on Skylake motherboards. This would put too much pressure on the CPU and motherboard. Any customer contacting Scythe would receive a replacement set of screws from the manufacturer at no charge. The replacement screws will be shipped from Wednesday.
Update, 07-12, 21:45: According to an email from Scythe to customers, it has since become clear that only the Scythe Mugen 4 and Mugen 4 PCGH Edition are affected.
