Some of Nintendo’s new games include speedrunner tools
Nintendo is introducing features to assist speedrunners in some upcoming games. For example, the games Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS and Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch have small tools built in.
At an event in London, Nintendo showcased upcoming games and gave live demonstrations of the likes of Sonic Forces, Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns. The latter title is a remake of the original game Samus Returns, which was released for the Game Boy. Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Return appear to have features to help speedrunners fly through the levels even faster.
A Nintendo employee showed the core elements of Metroid: Samus Returns, how the game works and how to control the character Samus. A new feature in this game for the 3DS is that Samus can target enemies in a 360-degree circle, writes an editor from Dot Esports, who was present at the presentation. This free-aim capability is accompanied by an audible signal that warns players of nearby enemies that are not yet visible on the screen. This allows players to take out these enemies even before they are visible.
In addition, a Nintendo community manager in the UK explained that in Super Mario Odyssey, players have the ability to link moves together as if it were one continuous maneuver. This allows areas to be traversed more easily and quickly. In addition, there will be marked areas in the game, which speedrunners can skip completely by a quick succession of jumps.
It is not clear whether these new features were deliberately introduced to help speedrunners. It is a fact that Mario games are quite popular among speedrunners. Recently, a speedrunner broke the speed record at Super Mario Bros. In the warpless category, the gamer had Mario sprint continuously through each level of the game, until he reached the end after more than 19 minutes and more than 3 seconds. This made him 0.54 seconds faster than the previous record holder.
In speedrunning, gamers set themselves the goal of completing a game as quickly as possible. This is often subject to certain conditions to make the challenge as interesting as possible for both the player and the viewer. For example, the player can be required to complete the game for 100 percent or to race to the end as quickly as possible, regardless of how much content he skips.
