Download WinRAR 5.21
RAR Labs has released the final release of version 5.21 of its archiving programs RAR and WinRAR. The popular compression tool is available for a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, OS X, and now Android. The program can handle the most common formats, including rar, zip, cab, arj, lzh, tar, gz, ace, uue, bz2, jar, iso, 7z and z. Furthermore, it has a skinnable interface and support for Zip64 and multivolume cab files. The relatively small jump in the version number indicates that this version has only minor changes and improvements.
New:
- The drag-and-drop context menu options in the “Settings” dialog = > “Integration” => “Context menu items…” provide the ability to disable WinRAR’s compression and extraction commands in the context menu that is displayed after files are dragged and dropped with the right mouse button.
- If the winrar.ini file is located in the same folder as the WinRAR installer, then winrar.ini will be copied to the WinRAR program folder after installation is complete.
- Where earlier versions in some cases created RAR5 volumes that were slightly smaller than the requested size, this situation is now less common. In most cases, the volume size will match that specified by the user.
- From now on, when extracting, WinRAR skips symlinks with absolute paths in the target it points to by default. You can enable the creation of such links via the “Allow absolute paths in symlinks” option on the “Extended” tab of the extraction dialog or with command line switch -ola.
Such links point to folders outside the target folder when extracted and may pose a security risk. Only enable the extraction of these files if you are sure that the contents of the archive are safe, for example with your own backups.
Bugs corrected:
- WinRAR 5.20 gave an unnecessary UAC (User Account Control) message when an executable file was launched from an archive located in a UAC protected folder. Since nothing is extracted to the folder where the archive is located in this case, the UAC notice is not necessary;
- WinRAR may overwrite files with read-only attribute only when extracting RAR and ZIP archive formats. This is now also built-in for other archive formats supported by WinRAR;
- The “Time Elapsed” and “Time Remaining” fields were displayed incorrectly when the “Convert” command was applied to multiple archives with the “Add recovery record” option enabled.
