RAR Labs has released the second beta release of version 5.00 of its RAR and WinRAR archiving tools. The popular compression tool is available for a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and OS X. The program handles most common formats – including rar, zip, cab, arj, lzh, tar, gz, ace, uue, bz2, jar, iso, 7z and z – has a customizable interface, and support for Zip64 and multivolume cab files. The main change in version 5.00 is the introduction of a new compression format. This format, dubbed rar 5.0, generally produces smaller archives, but at the expense of speed. In beta 2, the following two issues have been fixed:

• When adding an incompressible file to non-solid RAR archive, beta 1 could duplicate the first megabyte of archived file, resulting in damaged file.
• “Add to archive…” context menu command could place a created archive to a wrong folder.
