The developers of VideoLAN have released the second release candidate of VLC Media Player 1.0.0. VLC Media Player is an open source media player that can be used on a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The player is able to play a wide range of media formats out-of-the-box and without additional codecs, ranging from DVD movies to QuickTime clips. VLC Media Player can also handle various streaming protocols.

VLC Media Player 1.0.0 has some major changes and improvements. For example, Mac OS X 10.4 is no longer supported due to its ‘technical limitations’. Furthermore, a film is immediately paused when the pause button is pressed and the necessary encoders and decoders have been taken care of. You can see what has changed in the 1.0.0 release compared to the 0.9.9 version this text document read. Below are the RC2 release notes of the 1.0.0 version:

The VideoLAN project is glad to invite you to test the second release candidate of the Goldeneye version of VLC, numbered 1.0.0-rc2.
Source tarballs, Windows binaries and Mac OS binaries are already available for download. Changes can be found here.
