A new version of VLC Media Player has appeared on the Videolan website. The new version has been given version number 0.9.4 and can Linux, Mac OS X and – unlike the previous release – also for Windows be downloaded. VLC Media Player is an open source media player that can be used on a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The player is able to play a wide range of media formats out-of-the-box and without additional codecs, ranging from DVD movies to Quicktime clips. VLC Media Player can also handle various streaming protocols. The release notes of version 0.9.4 look like this:

We present you with VLC media player 0.9.4, the latest increment of our 0.9 series. This release brings Windows users all the 0.9.3 enhancements and fixes (please see our call for Windows developers below) as well as fixing a few more bugs for the other platforms.

Various bug fixes:

  • Crashes fixed in ogg, vobsub, dvdread
  • Fixes several memory leaks.

Mac OS X port:

  • Apple machines without Quartz Extreme are no longer supported (use 0.9.2 or earlier )
  • Fixed a crash with deletion of old preferences.
  • Fixed targetname for downloaded updates

Windows port:

  • Stability fix for the video output.
