Download Usenet Explorer 4.8.1
Version 4.8.1 of Usenet Explorer has been released. With this program files from usenet can be downloaded. Usenet Explorer is characterized by low processor and memory usage, and very extensive options, which may make it less suitable for novice users. The changelog for version 4.8.1 looks like this:
Usenet Explorer 4.8.1
- The built-in poster code has been revised, so files larger than 4GB can now be posted without splitting into volumes. When upgrading to this version ensure there are no any queued post tasks, since the task storing format has been changed to accomodate 64 bit file offsets (the posted messages view has not been affected).
- The external Par2 command line utility code which is called by UE to create par2 files has been revised, since the official version is not able to process files larger than 2GB correctly. UE will verify whether the utility is up to date and will prompt the user to upgrade if not. The revised command line utility creates par2 files even when QuickPar is not able to do so (the “Create” button is disabled), but QuickPar still works when comes to repair, so downloads requiring repair shouldn’t be a problem with other clients.
- Message-id hash function has been refined to prevent the kind of unconventional input addressed in v4.8 from potentially slowing down loading of a large import or other non-compact binary type of groups, even as currently it is not an issue with any known poster program.
- The “Reclaim purged” headers setting in “Edit menu->Properties->Newsgroups” will now persist between sessions.
