As you can read in this news post, the developers of Ubuntu released version 8.04 under the code name ‘Hardy Heron’. The lts stamp indicates a three-year support commitment for desktops and five years for servers. At the same time, of course, the other members of the Ubuntu family are also updated, such as Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu and Mythbuntu. The brief announcement of this new release is as follows:

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long-Term Support) on desktop and server, continuing Ubuntu’s tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS will be maintained and supported for three years on the desktop and five years on the server.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is also the basis for the new 8.04 release of Kubuntu.

8.04 brings a restructuring of Edubuntu as the Ubuntu Education Edition. The education desktop and application bundle now installs as an add-on to a standard Ubuntu desktop.
