TotalFinder is a program that is supposed to make the Finder in Mac OS X better. For example, the application adds tabs to Finder and displays two screens in dual mode, making it easier to copy or move files. Furthermore, it is possible to show folders first in the list and system files can be made visible. TotalFinder is released by BinaryAage and a license costs eighteen dollars. Below is a list of the changes made in the last few versions:

Changes in version 1.2.5

New

• Tab command opens default window location as set in General Finder Preferences. Previously it was opening the same location as the current tab. This was causing a lot of support requests because novices can be stuck in DMG view without sidebar (Lion does not have pill button anymore and CMD+OPT+T to show/hide toolbar with sidebar is not very well known keyboard shortcut).

Fixed

• Show/Hide Path Bar and Show/Hide Status Bar commands work reliably (even in dual mode).
• Resolved some weird crashes in Folder On Top feature.
• Fixed AppleScript command for setting window bounds (issue).

Improved

• Ironed out more sidebar issues.
• The CrashWatcher was improved and open sourced. I’ve also resolved memory leaks.
• TotalFinder.app can be freely relocated. Also optional ~/.totalfinder config is not used anymore.

Changes in version 1.2.1

Fixed

• I believe this is correct solution for sidebar issues under Lion.
• Compatibility check does not complain that Lion has unsupported version of Finder.

• It is possible to drag small tab icons (folder proxy icons) (issue).
• TotalFinderCrashWatcher – a new improved way for reporting TotalFinder crashes.
• Applications and scripts may now ask Finder via AppleScript if TotalFinder has been loaded (more info).

• Fixed tab focus problem when creating tabs by dragging folders into tab bar.
• TotalFinder reports reasonable error message when fails launching.

Removed

• TotalFinder is not using Spotlight anymore to locate TotalFinder.app if not found on standard location.
