Version 8.0 of the file manager Total Commander is still in development and a new beta release comes out almost every week. This Friday number 17 makes its appearance. The biggest change in version 8.0 is that a separate 64bit version is now also available. However, the average user will not notice much. Christian Ghisler, the developer of Total Commander, said: “The 64-bit bit version is mainly for ignorant people who think that 64-bit is better, and for some very specific usage cases (eg only 64-bit extension available, or 64-bit Windows PE with no 32-bit support). the main improvements in this release can be found below:

What’s new?

  • Directory hotlist (Ctrl+D): Option to add a new entry directly to a submenu of the list
  • Show harddisks connected via USB with removable disk icon, just like USB sticks
  • Search function: When restoring the last search result, also restore the cursor position and top index in the list
  • More colors can now be changed via Configuration – Options – Colors

Total Commander 8.0 is the first version available in both 32-bit and 64-bit. Currently there aren’t many 64-bit plugins yet – I will publish them when they become available. Therefore you should keep the 32-bit version for the moment if you use plugins regularly.

A list of additions and corrections, also for previous versions, can be found in the history file.

As usual, the update is free for all registered users.
