After 25 beta releases, the first release candidate of version 8.00 of the file manager Total Commander has now been released. The biggest change in version 8.00 is that a separate 64bit version is now also available. However, the average user will not notice much. Christian Ghisler, the developer of Total Commander, said: “The 64-bit bit version is mainly for ignorant people who think that 64-bit is better, and for some very specific usage cases (eg only 64-bit extension available, or 64-bit Windows PE with no 32-bit support). Because it all takes a lot longer than initially thought, a stable release from the 7.5 series has recently appeared, with mainly bug fixes.

What’s new?

  • When creating shortcuts (*.lnk) with Ctrl+Shift+F5, do not cut name after last dot for directories (AppendLnk=2 in wincmd.ini)
  • wincmd.ini, SelectionFocus=color: Surround file in focus with special color when there are selected files in the active panel. Meant as a warning that file operations would affect more than the current file.

Total Commander 8.0 is the first version available in both 32-bit and 64-bit. Currently there aren’t many 64-bit plugins yet – I will publish them when they become available. Therefore you should keep the 32-bit version for the moment if you use plugins regularly.

A list of additions and corrections, also for previous versions, can be found in the history file.

As usual, the update is free for all registered users.
