There are several programs to control computers remotely. TightVNC is one such program and as the name implies, it uses VNC. ‘Tight’ refers to the use of compression, so that the program also performs well over slow connections. Since version 2.0, TightVNC is only suitable for Windows 2000 and above, Windows 9x/NT and Linux users should version 1.3.10 keep using. Version 2.0.4 contains several bug fixes, mainly on the server side.

What’s Fixed?

Here is the list of changes in TightVNC 2.0.4, as compared to version 2.0.3. All the changes are in the server part, the viewer is almost the same as in the previous version.

• Fixed a potential security problem which could allow a logged in user to gain elevated privileges in file transfers. This problem affected Windows 2000 systems only.
• CPU use was significantly reduced in idle periods when there are no users connected.
• Fixed a problem which resulted in wrong color rendering on “big-endian” viewers (eg PowerPC-based Mac viewers).
• Fixed rendering of semi-transparent mouse cursors. Previously, big black boxes could be seen instead of such cursors.
