Synovel Technologies has released a new beta release of Spicebird. Spicebird is a so-called ‘open source collaboration suite’ and can be used for e-mailing, has a calendar that can also be shared with others and messages can be sent via instant messaging. It’s basically a combination of Thunderbird, Sunbird and Xmpp4moz, plus some self-developed extras.

Since the previous beta release, which carried version number 0.4, some changes have been made. For example, Google Gadgets can now be added, there is a new instant messaging framework called Telepathy and components of the program that are not used can be disabled. Below are the most important innovations:

This release of Spicebird adds the following functionality:

  • Chat with friends on services like Yahoo, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ and Jabber
  • Add iGoogle Gadgets to Spicebird
  • Disable the applications that are unused
  • Access Google calendar
  • Experimental support for managing blogs
  • Available in more than 10 languages
  • Basic set of add-ons
  • Import data from Thunderbird, Outlook and Outlook Express
