You can use a simple ping command to monitor the presence of various components in the network. However, you can only view the current status and the output is text-based. An application that keeps a history of availability and can then display this graphically is SmokePing. This application requires a web server with Perl, Rrdtool and some other components. This allows an overview to be set up as on this page can be viewed. The developers have released version 2.3.6 with the following announcement:

I have released smoking 2.3.6. This release contains the following changes:

  • the ‘ralf’ fix for cgi which is not able to read the secrets file. — toby
