Skype released a new version of its VoIP client for Mac OS X earlier this week. Not so long ago, the version number was aligned with that of Windows and there was a jump from 2.8 to 5.0. It also resembles the Windows version more in terms of appearance and possibilities. For example, there is video conferencing with up to ten people and text messages can be sent to contacts who are not online. Skype for Mac requires at least Mac OS X 10.5.6 and the download is 19.5MB in size. The changelog for this release looks like this:
Fixed issues:
- Video calling: Skype was taking ownership of the video camera
- Video calling: Skype crashed after connecting video camera using firewire cable
- Calling: Seldom Skype crashed on ending call to landline
- General: Skype crashed on Leopard when closing in application credit payment window
Known issues:
- Application: Skype can feel slow when waking up from sleep after being in sleep for long period with 100+ active conversations
Current Solution: Be patient when Skype resumes, it’s best to not put computer with Skype on to sleep for long periods (3+ days) - Application: Occasional freeze for Leopard users if they right click to open context menus when running PGP Desktop application
Current Solution: Upgrade to the latest version of PGP Desktop - Call: In Leopard can not press number keys on keyboard to generate touch tones
Current Solution: Use buttons in dial pad (CMD + 2) - Call: Some users cannot leave a voicemail
