The phpBB development team released the third beta of the 3.0 branch over the weekend posted online. This release follows the second beta that was put online exactly three months ago. phpBB is a free to use forum made available under the GPL license. The forum software is one of the most widely used open source forums and uses PHP and a database program to store, store and retrieve posts. In addition to MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Access are also supported as database software. The new 3.0 branch has a number of improvements over the current stable 2.0 series, including improved admin, search capabilities and a host of other overhauls and new features. A complete overview of the most important new features can be found here this page to be found. What exactly has changed in phpBB 3.0 beta 3 compared to beta 2 can be found in this document; below are the release notes posted of beta 3:

We are pleased to announce the availability of the phpBB3 Beta3 package. With this third beta release we are again a great step forward. With this beta no update path is provided due to a number of extensive database schema changes and we having decided to implement full UTF-8 capability. But what we did is implementing the first steps to provide you with an automatic update tool which should lay the ground for providing updates later. Everyone having a previous beta installed need to re-install the software. If you do a new installation, please be sure to also remove any remaining files, especially those within the cache directory.
