Version 4.0.5 of Paint.NET has been released. As the name suggests, this program needs the .Net framework to do its job. It started as a study assignment for Washington State University, to replace the Paint included with Windows, but now contains a lot of functionality that we also see in more extensive, commercial packages. Version 4.0 works a lot faster, especially on multicore processors, but does have at least Windows 7 as a system requirement. Version 4.0.5 is a so-called bug fix release and fixes a handful of issues.

Paint.NET 4.0.5 is now available

There were a few bugs that got introduced in 4.0.4, so here’s an update that fixes them. Chiefly among these bugs are a break in how the Magic Wand tool works, a crash when using Effects, and one when trying to use the Shapes tool.

Fixed:

  • Subtraction mode in the Magic Wand tool was generating BA instead of AB.
  • Crash when using Effect -> Repeat.
  • Crash (AccessViolationException) on some systems when initializing the canvas for hardware accelerated rendering. It will still crash but then switch to software rendering for the next startup, which will then avoid the crashing.
  • Crash when clicking on the Shapes tool if you had run an old 4.0 beta/alpha and had also changed which shape is used at startup to be a line or curve.
  • Crash when using Settings -> Update -> Check Now due to incorrectly determining that UAC is not enabled.
