An NAC system can be used to secure a network environment. It allows automatic blocking of network devices based on pre-set policies when an undesirable situation occurs. Think of unknown network devices of visitors, a worm that is trying to spread or an authorized device that is equipped with a different operating system via a boot flop or live CD. PacketFence is one such nac system with support for 802.1x and vlan isolation, with which a network device can be placed in the correct vlan after analysis. The developers have released 1.8.2, which is also available as a VMware image with a full PacketFence installation. The corresponding announcement looks like this:

PacketFence 1.8.2 released

The Inverse Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of PacketFence 1.8.2. This is a maintenance release of PacketFence which focuses on stability and includes many bug fixes and several small enhancements.

The ZEN edition of PacketFence allows you to rapidly get Packetfence running in your network environment. It consists of a fully installed and preconfigured version of PacketFence 1.8.2 inside a VMWare image.

Important changes since the previous release:

  • enhanced integration of expire_mode and VLAN isolation (thanks to Maikel van der Roest)
  • added many tests using Test::More
  • correct process ID is now written into PID file by pfmon and pfredirect
  • adjusted dependency checks in installer.pl and the RPM spec file
  • fixed SNMPv3 createUser command
  • better handling of non-english installations
  • removed unused icons and HTML files from Web Admin GUI
  • renamed passive mode into arp mode in configurator templates
