Opera has released a development version, or snapshot as they call it, of version 12.50 of its web browser of the same name. Opera has browsers for all major computing platforms and for a variety of mobile operating systems. The browser offers tabs, can be controlled with mouse gestures, has an embedded download manager and offers protection against phishing and malware. Not only can you surf with Opera, but you can also send e-mails; there is a built-in bittorrent client and chat via irc. The release notes for this version, which has several improvements related to usage in Windows 8, can be found below.

Preparing for Windows 8

With the release of Windows 8 getting closer by the day, we are making changes to Opera so that it works nicely with the new Windows feature set. Our initial effort is on improving “classic” desktop support, specifically by putting more attention on touch devices. From now on you should be able to scroll and move web pages and elements in Opera UI using touch. This includes touch zoom and inertial scrolling. yes As an extra bonus touch support should also work on Windows 7.

We are eager to find any issues you experience with this snapshot when operating a Windows 7/8 based touch device. Be aware that more work on touch support is ongoing, so we may be able to include your feedback in a future build.
