Netscape is one of the old acquaintances in browserland. The development has stood still for a long time, but since the beginning of this year the ball has been picked up again. Netscape 8 has anti-phishing technology onboard using a blacklist that is updated three times a day, support for tabbed browsing, and an RSS feed that shows the latest news. The browser is based on Mozilla Firefox and uses the Gecko engine by default, and the Internet Explorer engine is also supported. Version 8.0.3.1 has recently been made available to fix a number of security vulnerabilities. The changes look like this:

What’s fixed in this version?

  • MFSA 2005-56 Code execution through shared function objects
  • MFSA 2005-53 Standalone applications can run arbitrary code through the browser
• Fixed remaining history syncing issues between rendering engines
• Various bug and crash fixes
