Nero is one of the best known and most widely used programs for burning audio, video and data files to a CD or DVD. It is also possible to design and print covers. Furthermore, video and sound files can be converted to different formats and it is possible to rip audio CDs. Due to this multitude of functions, the program is now more than 200MB in size.

However, Nero also releases a free version of its burning software. In version 9, it was still called Nero Lite, but that was a somewhat confusing name. After Nero grew considerably in size from version 6, other initiatives have already arisen to offer a stripped down download, with exactly that name. As of version 10, the name has therefore been changed to Nero BurnLite. Nero BurnLite is still free, but it is obviously a much slimmed down version, which also comes with an Ask toolbar. For example, only data discs can be baked and CDs or DVDs copied. If other functionality is requested, an option is always offered to purchase the full version. Nero has not disclosed what has changed in this release.
