The Mozilla Organization has provided Mozilla Camino, its web browser for the Mac OS X platform, with the first beta version of the 1.1 series. This web browser uses Cocoa for the user interface and the well-known Gecko engine to render web pages. In addition, the program includes tabbed browsing, a popup blocker and a Google search field. The 1.1 series includes a slew of new features, including support for Mac OS X’s built-in spell checker and the use of Keychain passwords stored by Safari. The announcement of this first beta version looks like this:

Camino 1.1 Beta:

The following major features have been added to Camino 1.1 Beta and will be in Camino 1.1 when it is released. The full release notes are also available. Note: Some of these features are not yet completely implemented.

  • Privacy & Security: Camino now warns users if the login form on a website differs from the form used when saving the password, and Camino 1.1 Beta also supports Kerberos authentication used in many internal networks.
  • Annoyance Blocking: Camino 1.1 Beta can now disable all plugins. This version also includes the ability to block Flash animations until the user clicks on them.
  • Session Saving: Camino can now restore tabs and windows that were open before an unexpected quit, and there is also a preference to save a list of all active tabs and windows when the user quits and restore them when launching Camino again.

In addition, Camino 1.1 Beta includes the following notable bug fixes over Camino 1.1 Alpha 2.

  • Spell-checking: “Learn Spelling” and “Ignore Spelling” now appear in the spell-check context menu.
  • Downloading Files: Camino no longer hangs when downloading files to the Desktop with Quicksilver running.
  • Pop-up Blocking: Camino 1.1b introduces a new set of options for blocking pop-up windows, allowing users to “Always Allow,” “Always Deny,” “Allow Once,” or simply close the pop-up notification. In addition, the close button on the pop-up blocker is more visible, and the Web Features preference pane now allows users manually to allow or prevent sites from showing pop-up windows.

Camino 1.1 Alpha 2:

The following major features have been added to Camino 1.1 Alpha 2 and will be in Camino 1.1 when it is released. The full release notes are also available. Note: Some of these features are not yet completely implemented.

    • Camino versions older than 1.1a2 will not be able to read passwords modified or created in Camino 1.1a2 or later versions.
    • Using “Reset Safari” will delete any passwords saved by Camino 1.1a2 or later that have been used in Safari.
  • Window Zooming: The Zoom command now resizes the window to fit the current page’s content instead of making the window full-screen.
