Version 2.1.6 of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has been released. This program is aimed at fighting spy, ad and malware. However, it is mainly aimed at removing malicious software that pretends to be a bona fide antivirus or antispyware solution, but in reality has less good intentions, such as ransom– or scareware† In addition to the free version, there is a paid variant, which offers additional functionality, including real-time protection.

In version 2.1, the user interface has been refreshed, among other things, the latest definitions are now always retrieved for a scan and a notification is given when new beta versions are available. Furthermore, quarantining items has become easier and the program has become better at recognizing and removing rootkits. This update fixes the following issues:

• Fixed crash while scanning during Heuristic Analysis phase
• Fixed SDK database load errors by making a change to temporarily ignore the “Check for updates before scanning” setting for Scheduled Scans
• Fixed crash when editing or removing an Access Policy if the name and description fields in the policy were different
• Fixed issue where the “Restart computer when required for threat removal” setting did not appear correctly on Add or Edit Schedule dialogs
• Updated end user license agreement
