Download KDE Software Compilation 4.4.5

The fifth update for version 4.4.0 of the KDE Software Compilation was released on Tuesday. This popular desktop environment used to be known as the K Desktop Environment, but the developers now believe that KDE Software Compilation covers the load better. KDE is primarily developed for Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris, but there are versions for it too Windows and Mac OS X, although they are somewhat less advanced in their development. The KDE Software Compilation comes with a standard desktop, including fifteen packages of applications, including a personal information manager, multimedia and network management programs, and games. Version 4.4.5 is the latest update to appear before version 4.4.0; version 4.5.0 will be released in August. Below are the main improvements made in this release:

KDE SC 4.4.5 brings a number of improvements:

• Several bugs in encoding and refreshing in Konsole have been fixed
• A couple of crashes in Okular’s PDF viewer have been fixed
• Alarms have received some fixes in KDE PIM

the changelog lists more, if not all improvements since KDE SC 4.4.4. There are no more scheduled releases in the 4.4 series. The next feature release will be KDE SC 4.5.0, to be released in August this year.
