The HTCondor Team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has released a new stable version of its workload management system HTCondor. The version number has landed at 8.4.0 and the package is under the Apache 2.0 License issued. HTCondor focuses on the management of compute-intensive tasks and can distribute them over several connected nodes. The user sends his task to HTCondor, after which it handles the process based on set policies and the availability of connected resources, and finally sends the results back to the user. HTCondor can, for example, control a dedicated Beowulf cluster, but also regular desktops that have nothing to do for a while. The announcement of this release looks like this:

HTCondor 8.4.0 released!

The HTCondor team is pleased to announce the release of HTCondor version 8.4.0. After a year of development, this is the first release of the new stable series. This version contains: a Docker Universe to run a Docker container as an HTCondor job; the submit file can queue a job for each file found; the submit file can contain macros; a dry-run option to condor_submit to test the submit file without any actions; HTCondor pools can use IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously; execute directories can be encrypted upon user or administrator request; Vanilla Universe jobs can utilize periodic application-level checkpoints; the administrator can establish job requirements; numerous scalability changes.
