Using FTD, users can point out to each other what binary files can be found in the offered newsgroups. It is also possible to respond to each other’s posts and possibly to rate the information in question. The developers released version 3.8.5 earlier this week, as stated on the front page. Below are the main innovations of the new version:

An update for FTD is available!

After installing the update, you will probably not have noticed that a number of things have been changed on FTD. The interface has been streamlined, and the NZB button has been eliminated. The reason for this is partly that the old interface needed an update for a long time, but also partly to avoid legal problems.

Furthermore, the NZB button has been removed. Although FTD does not run an NZB search engine itself, we want to avoid any semblance of collaboration with potentially illegal search engines. That’s why we removed that button. The legal question is whether an NZB search engine is legal. The SearchMP3 search engine has been convicted for collecting and indexing hyperlinks to MP3 files, and that case law may also apply to NZB files, according to Engelfriet.

For the same reason, there is now a filter on hyperlinks in messages. Not only in spots, but also in responses to them and even in private messages. It is not allowed to include hyperlinks to NZB files, torrents and the like in FTD messages. Our mods will keep a close eye on this. Trying to include hyperlinks to NZB files (or something similar) in your spot or comment will eventually get you banned from the community.

In addition, the option to attach PAR files to a spot has been removed. This capability was rarely used anyway, and we want to avoid accusing people who post PAR files of being complicit in illegal uploading.
