After a bit of ‘oops’ about the copyright of some icons used within the program, FastStone Soft has picked up the thread again and brings us the first beta release of version 2.9 of its Image Viewer. This small and free program can compete with large commercial programs such as ACDSee and the also free programs XnView and IrfanView. It can handle most common graphics and RAW file formats and can perform some basic editing such as rotating (lossless for jpeg), cropping, resizing, red-eye removal, and adjusting colors, contrast, and brightness. Furthermore, it can generate a slideshow, possibly with music, and photos can be sent by email. Only one feature has been added in this release, which is the following:

New in version 2.9 beta 1:

• Added “Download from Memory Card”. Now it is possible to use FastStone Image Viewer to transfer images from your digital camera’s memory card to your computer.
