Thursday saw the fifth alpha release, or ‘prebeta’ as the makers call it, of version 0.99 of Exact Audio Copy. Exact Audio Copy is an advanced audio extraction program for reading protected or unprotected audio CDs to the computer, whereby you can choose almost any compression format imaginable. The program was developed by Andre Wiethoff, out of dissatisfaction with the extraction programs at the time, which often had poor results with damaged CDs. Exact Audio Copy uses a reading technique that can detect errors with very high reliability and in many cases even correct them. Through the AccurateRipplugin, the quality of the rip can be compared with that of other users.

Exact Audio Copy 0.99 prebeta 5 is nothing more than a so-called service release, which fixes some bugs. When pre-beta 4 was released in January 2008, Andre Wiethoff announced that he would focus on the next version of Exact Audio Copy. However, not much has come of this due to time constraints. This time, too, reference is made to that new version in the release notes, but details are left open. Below is the prebeta 5 changelog:

• Fixed a small bug in some of the CRC calculations
• Paths of 1000 characters in length (and file names up to 500 characters) can now be used (hopefully all command line compressors are still working)
• Fixed the creation of the correct CUE sheet in some cases when using current gap settings
• Fixed CDRDAO writing for multisession discs (leaving the CD open)
• EAC should not bring up its main window on using external compressors
• Fixed a small bug when correcting an extracted block
• Wizard now creates –ignore-tag-errors option for LAME encodings
• Fixed that on inserting a different CD sometimes not all tracks are extracted
