Alwil Software has released a new version of its antivirus program and is offering it as beta due to the large amount of changes. In version 5, the old Home and Professional editions have been replaced with Avast Free Antivirus and Avast Pro Antivirus to more clearly indicate which version is free and which is not. In addition, a version called Avast Internet Security is now available, which includes a firewall and anti-spam as extras. In this new release, several sandbox and firewall improvements have been made, as well as many bug fixes. The most important improvements are listed below.

Most notable improvements include:

• Improved interaction with Windows System Restore; namely, avast now auto-repairs itself when it detects a corrupted VPS due to a System Restore (or other reasons)
• AswSP.sys: solved a minor stability issue
• Solved a problem related to inserting the license files
• Added the activation codes feature
• Improvements in the avast! sandbox
• Performance improvements in the Behavior Shield
• Avast Screen saver now accessible even in 64-bit Windows Vista
• Stability improvement in aswTdi.sys (solved a compatibility problem with AVG)
• iS firewall: solved a potential BSOD condition
• Various improvements in the avast! sandbox module
• Minor fixes in the GUI
• Added Catalan and Belarusian language packs
