Social medium Parler is back online after a month of downtime
Social medium Parler has been online again since Monday afternoon. The platform has been inaccessible since January 11, after several tech companies broke their ties with the medium. The platform is still banned from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Parler would now be available again for users who already have an account, The Verge writes. The medium would start accepting new users starting next week. Existing accounts have been ported over, although published posts from users appear to be no longer available. Many posts, which were publicly available before the ban, were archived in January by a researcher.
The social medium also appoints Mark Meckler as the company’s new interim CEO. Previously, John Matze headed the company, but was fired by the platform’s board at the end of January, The New York Times reported. Meckler would lead the company for the time being, while the company is looking for a permanent CEO.
Parler has been around since 2018 and is an alternative to social media such as Facebook and Twitter. According to the creators of the service, users of those platforms cannot always express their opinions without getting banned. Parler went offline in January after tech companies cut ties with the platform. For example, Amazon stopped web hosting for the social medium.
In addition to the ban from Amazon Web Services, the app has also been removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store since January. The various companies did this because of the content of posts published on Parler, in addition to a lack of moderation. The platform’s apps are still banned from these app stores.
At the beginning of this year, the site experienced a revival in popularity. This coincided with the storming of the US Capitol on Wednesday, January 6. The makers of Parler said after the ban that the platform should eventually come back online, although the company then stated that rebuilding Parler could take “up to a week.” Ultimately, the platform was down for a little over a month.
