‘Social DJ Network’ Turntable Returns in Two Forms at Once
Social DJ network Turntable.fm is back. The service, on which users can take turns contributing to a playlist that one listens to with others in a virtual space, is even being relaunched by two different parties at the same time.
These are Turntable.fm, with the same name as the original that went black in 2013, and simply Turntable, which is located at the domain name Turntable.org. The fm variant was co-founded by Billy Chasen, who was also behind the original. The .org variant is co-created by Joseph Perla, who was also behind the original.
The FM variant is apparently online, but otherwise shows little sign of life. The website asks for a password and states that if an interested person suggests a good number to use with the service, they can get in. Also the Twitter account of the service does not provide additional information about availability, platforms and the like.
The .org variant takes a different approach. It has a website, where it is explained that this service primarily focuses on a good mobile variant and that uploading MP3s will be possible. In addition, there is crowdfunding; the counter for this currently stands at 623,000 dollars. The original funding target was half a million dollars. Furthermore, the service via Twitter know that you can sign up for a beta test that will start in April. Investors will receive priority and a discount on future subscriptions for the service.
Turntable.fm originally went black in 2013 due to lack of funds. The owners stated at the time that ‘the costs of running a music service are too high and we cannot keep up with cost savings and monetization’.
