Snowden joins Reset the Net initiative
Whistleblower Edward Snowden has rallied behind the Reset the Net protests. According to Snowden, the internet community itself must take steps to prevent governments from tapping internet traffic on a large scale.
Reddit, Google and Mozilla, among others, have already rallied behind the Reset the Net campaign and Snowden has now announced that he also supports the protests. According to a statement from the whistleblower, the responsibility to restore the privacy of internet users lies partly with themselves, partly because there is a chance that American politics will not or insufficiently limit the eavesdropping practices of the NSA.
Snowden argues that broadly adopting strong encryption is the first effective step toward restoring Internet users’ privacy. The former NSA system administrator says he fully supports the Reset the Net campaign, because it calls on companies and organizations to encrypt data traffic and provides tools for it.
Reset the Net is an initiative of the Fight for the Future movement. Thursday has been declared a day of action, on which various websites place banners calling on internet users to protest in order to regain their privacy.
