SNK may be working on a mini version of Neo Geo console
The Japanese SNK reports in a tweet that it wants to celebrate its 40th anniversary by launching ‘a new game machine’. That may indicate the arrival of a mini version of the Neo Geo.
SNK is not very communicative in the tweet. For example, the Japanese company leaves open what kind of new game machine it is and also whether games will be supplied with the machine. With the tweet, the company places a picture of an object that is under a cloth, with the Neo Geo logo on the cloth. Although the tweet refers to the console, the item is not in the shape of the Neo Geo. The tweet also doesn’t make it clear when the new device will hit the market and what it will cost.
SNK may be working on a mini version of the console. It would thus follow in the footsteps of Nintendo, which released the NES Classic Mini and the SNES Classic Mini in recent years. There are more companies that have followed Nintendo’s lead. The THEC64 Mini recently appeared and Sega announced the Sega Genesis Mini earlier this month.
If the shape under the canvas is decisive, then SNK could be planning to market a small variant of an arcade cabinet. The Neo Geo also originally appeared in 1990 as an arcade cabinet, in which the owner could place various cartridges. Based on the same hardware, the company later released a console for home use. Cartridges could also be exchanged to play different games. SNK is best known for fighting games like King of Fighters and Samurai Showdown, and shooters like Metal Slug.
