Snapchat wants to integrate journalistic content into its app

Snapchat would like to partner with media companies to offer journalistic content, including articles, videos and photos, on its app. This would include content from CNN, ESPN, National Geographic, Vice and Yahoo.

The rumors come from The New York Times, citing unnamed sources. Snapchat is planning to create a separate section within its application to show journalistic content. In the so-called Discover section, users could find articles, videos and photos created by media partners for Snapchat. It is still unclear whether this means that the content will not appear on the respective media’s own websites.

There are already said to be agreements with CNN, ESPN, National Geographic, Vice and Yahoo to produce content for Snapchat. Next, Snapchat would like to monetize itself by selling ads in the Discover section, for which it has already attracted several interested companies. The ads would be placed among the other content and the proceeds would be shared with the content creators.

Snapchat is a popular chat service, mainly because it makes it possible to have posted messages or photos automatically deleted a short time after viewing them. The company behind the service has been trying to increase its revenue for some time and therefore started showing advertisements last year.
