‘Smartphone yummy’ Evan Blass may show new Nest thermostat design
‘Smartphone yummy’ Evan Blass posted on Twitter an image of a new design of the Nest smart thermostat. It may be a cheaper version of the device, about which reports have come out before.
Blass supplies no further information on the picture. The new design looks like it’s made of plastic instead of mostly metal and glass, which is what the current design has. The use of cheaper material would rhyme with an insider’s report from March this year. It said the company would be working on a cheaper version of the smart thermostat, which would cost $49 less than the existing $249 model. In the Benelux, the device costs 249 euros. That message also stated that the metal edge on the outside would be replaced, which seems to be correct based on this picture.
Nest’s new thermostat is able to regulate the temperature per room, according to the previous message. That’s a feature that the current model doesn’t have and it’s unclear whether it would be added to the existing thermostat at a later date. In any case, it would make sense that the more expensive model has at least all the functionalities of the cheaper model.
Nest is also said to be working on a smart alarm system, but we haven’t seen anything concrete about it yet. In the meantime, a new security camera called the Nest Cam IQ has also been launched by the Google subsidiary.
Nest’s smart thermostat is able to learn the user’s daily schedule and preferences within a few weeks. After the temperature has been set manually for a while, the appliance gradually takes over and tries to save as much money as possible for the owner by adjusting the temperature down when absent.
