Skype only pushes notifications to devices where user is active

Skype changes the way it passes notifications. From now on, the app no longer pushes notifications to all devices, but only to devices on which the user is active. As a result, not all devices have to sound notifications at the same time.

If a user on a tablet sends a chat message to contacts, the notifications from that chat session will only arrive on that device as long as Skype is active on the tablet, according to a blog post on the site of the voip and chat service. If Skype is no longer active on the tablet, notifications will go back to all devices.

The change follows a change earlier this year, in which Skype, like Facebook and Twitter, started synchronizing notifications, so that at least users did not receive the same notification multiple times in a row. The new change should further reduce user annoyance about notifications on multiple devices, the Microsoft subsidiary says.

The change does not apply to phone calls: notifications still go to all devices. Skype runs on many different devices, including desktop and laptops, as well as smartphones and tablets, TVs, and consoles.
